Ocean jasper is the optimist. Look close and you'll see tiny circles, called orbs, scattered through swirls of green, cream, pink, and sometimes yellow, like a tide pool viewed from above. It's a joy stone: not the loud kind, the steady kind. The kind that helps you notice the one good thing in a day that had plenty of bad ones.

It's also genuinely rare. The original deposits sit on the northwest coast of Madagascar, in a spot that could only be reached by boat at low tide, and the first veins were mined out years ago. Every piece is a small slice of a place that's basically gone. Carved into butterfly wings, it becomes a piece about lightness, about the moment you stop bracing and start noticing.

Physical Properties

Appearance: orbicular patterns (small round "eyes") in green, white, cream, pink, and yellow, o en with swirls and bands. Wildly variable from piece to piece.

Composition: a variety of chalcedony (silicon dioxide) with orbicular structure.

Hardness: 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Durable, but wing tips are thin, so handle by the base.

Origin: Madagascar only, from a small stretch of the northwest coast near Marovato.
